I knew about the radium girls, but I recently (somehow for the first time) heard about phossy jaw!

Through Joe Scott on this vid: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=31iZZcTmDsg
And the same day I somehow also ended up watching something on the subject from Caitlin Doughty – Ask A Mortician ?
    Both awesome channels btw.

But that made me wonder…what else crazy historic stuff is out there?
I mean lead poisoning we all know (right?), but some more of the obscure stuff could be interesting to list here, and to discuss of course.

Kind of crazy. It’s a bit like those atropin drops women used to make their pupils large.

I love Ask a Mortician. What a great channel!

Yep – I love that this is the reason Linnaeus chose the name “belladonna” (for Atropus belladonna aka Deadly Nightshade) because of the cosmetic use of Italian women squeezing drops of the berry juice in their eyes to look seductive. Sadly when I had similar drops in my eyes for a retinal scan and walked around with huge pupils, I got no such interest from people, so I guess that fashion is out (funny story – the ophthalmologist said if the police stopped me and asked if I’d been on drugs, he said to give them his number and he’d explain).

Agreed on Ask A Mortician. I actually only just discovered it recently via MindField’s episode on death.

The thalidomide children are another instance of unchecked profiteering poisoning/ruining thousands of lives. https://youtu.be/41n3mDoVbvk

Yet the drug lives on today, with the (now adult) children’s blessing, because it really can do good…just not in pregnant women.

I remember growing up with at least two friends that missed limbs due to this drug…

Black lung for coal miners and asbestosis are probably more analogous though, since they’re occupationally-related.

Yeah but so is phossy jaw and the radium poisoning, I feel they still belong here.
