Since a couple of weeks, I am the chairman of the Classical Singers’ branch of the Swedish Theatre Union. Being part of a union has always been an obvious thing for me, the essence of solidarity in a larger context. Before being elected chairman, I had been a member for over a decade.

I do not fail to see, however, that a growing political broiler class and obsolete structures put unions at risk of becoming dinosaur institutions – giant, awkward things of the past. It is also unclear to what extent political fractions have any influence whatsoever in a world heavily favoring multi-billionaire oligarchy.

I hope to start a fruitful discussion on the possibilities and necessary strategies for unions in the new Millennium.
